Christian Science & the power of healing prayer
I was working in a friend’s garden one day and had watered an area between two stretches of cement, a walkway and a ledge - both at ground level next to the wall. Wanting to reach the ledge from the walkway without stepping in the mud, I leaped the four feet towards it. I was looking downward, forgetting there was a metal awning at the same height as my head, jutting out from the wall. The top of my head impacted the sharp corner of the awning with considerable force.
(Prior to my study of Christian Science, I had sustained a similar head injury, and had been surprised at how readily the top of the head bleeds. This previous incident, however, involved an object which wasn’t as sharp as the awning corner, and the force was not as great; still, the bleeding during that accident had been profuse.)
Immediately upon impact with the awning I began reciting a passage from Mary Baker Eddy’s book, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. "Become conscious for a single moment that Life and intelligence are purely spiritual, — neither in nor of matter, — and the body will then utter no complaints. If suffering from a belief in sickness [here I substituted the word injury], you will find yourself suddenly well." (p. 14) I repeated these words over and over.
I was then pleasantly surprised and grateful to discover two things: one, there was almost no pain; and two, there was very little bleeding. The wound healed in a very short time.
